Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Becomes First Black Woman to Lead WTO

In 2021, the world witnessed a powerful moment in history when Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala became the first Black woman to serve as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This achievement not only made headlines around the globe but also became a moment of pride for Nigeria and the entire Black community.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment is more than just a personal victory — it is a shining example of Black excellence, resilience, and leadership. Born in Nigeria, she broke barriers from an early age, earning degrees from top institutions like Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before joining the WTO, she served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and also held top roles at the World Bank.

Her leadership at the WTO marks a new chapter for the global trade body, which plays a key role in shaping trade policies and rules for countries all over the world. As the first woman and the first African to hold this position, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is setting a bold example for future generations.

Under her leadership, the WTO has focused on making global trade more fair, especially for developing countries. She is passionate about creating opportunities, promoting equity, and tackling trade barriers that hold nations back.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s rise reminds us that representation matters. She is showing young Black girls and boys everywhere that they can achieve great things — even on the world stage. Her story is not just about personal success, but also about breaking ceilings and opening doors for others.

At Success Is Us, we celebrate trailblazers like Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who lead with vision, courage, and heart. Her work continues to inspire millions and shows the world what’s possible when Black brilliance is embraced and uplifted. To learn more about the World Trade Organization, visit www.wto.org.
