Black Entrepreneur Creates First Travel App to Help Travelers Avoid Sundown Towns

Lawrence, a Black entrepreneur, created the first and only Black travel review mobile app, Green Book Global, to help Black travelers navigate safely through the United States. The travel app is available for download on both iOS and Android and is designed to help users avoid Sundown Towns — areas historically unsafe for Black people after dark.

After quitting his job to travel the world, Lawrence explored over 30 countries across all seven continents, including Antarctica, in less than a year. While he enjoyed amazing experiences, he often felt anxious about racism and the challenges of Traveling While Black in different places.

Realizing there was no app to share insights about Black travel safety, Lawrence decided to create Green Book Global. He drew inspiration from the original Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide used during the Jim Crow era to help Black travelers find safe places to stay and dine. Lawrence modernized this concept with the Driving While Black Road Trip Planner, a tool within the app that highlights Black-friendly cities and warns travelers about Sundown Towns.

The app helps users plan safer road trips, access Black-owned businesses, and find travel reviews from other Black travelers. It’s a vital resource for those looking to explore the USA with confidence and peace of mind.
