Nationwide – Donna Taylor, a 60-year-old U.S. Army veteran, and her sister, Deborah Taylor, are making waves in the sleepwear industry with their brand, Sleep Sassy Sleepwear. Originally from Newark, New Jersey, the sisters moved to Virginia to care for their aging mother and launched their sleepwear line nationally in 2020.
The idea for the business was born out of a practical need. One evening, Deborah commented on Donna’s mismatched nightgown and bonnet, prompting a discussion about the lack of comfortable, stylish sleepwear for women, especially those dealing with the challenges of menopause. “As African Americans, part of our hair care routine has always been to protect our hair when we sleep,” Donna shared. “But finding coordinated, attractive, and functional sleepwear is difficult.”
More than one million women in the U.S. experience menopause each year, often accompanied by night sweats that disrupt sleep. The sisters decided to tackle this problem by creating a line of sleepwear made from high-quality bamboo fabric. Known for being luxuriously soft, temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and breathable, the fabric offers women relief from night sweats while ensuring style and comfort.
The brand features whimsical prints, vibrant colors, and a unique touch: matching satin-lined bonnets. Donna and Deborah design the products themselves, while manufacturing is handled by a company with a long history in the textile industry. The collection includes nightgowns, pajama sets, and even robes and sleepshirts, with sizes ranging from small to 3X to ensure inclusivity.
Donna, who enjoys sewing, took on the challenge of learning design techniques, fabric selection, and production processes—all while juggling full-time corporate jobs and caregiving responsibilities. Despite the challenges, the sisters take pride in their journey. “It’s been a lot to learn, but we’re happy with where we are,” Donna said.
Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the fabric’s comfort and the polished look it provides. Interestingly, the line has also gained approval from the partners of customers, who love the coordinated look of the sleepwear and bonnets.
