HBCU Grad Created Doll Brand That Builds Confidence in Young Black Girls

An HBCU graduate with two degrees in psychology is making a powerful impact on children’s self-esteem through toys that truly represent them. Shaneisha Dodson, the founder of The Brilliant Girl Doll Company, created her brand with one clear mission: to help young Black girls feel confident, seen, and proud of who they are.

With her background in psychology, Shaneisha understands how early childhood experiences and toys can shape a child’s self-image. She noticed that many dolls on the market did not reflect the beauty, intelligence, and uniqueness of Black girls. That gap inspired her to create a doll line that celebrates them in a positive and empowering way.

The Brilliant Girl Doll Company offers more than just dolls. The brand also sells books and math kits designed to encourage young girls to dream big, believe in themselves, and develop strong skills early in life. So far, the company has sold thousands of dolls, books, and educational kits, showing strong support from families who value representation.

Shaneisha says she is not just selling toys — she is building confidence. Her goal is to make sure young Black girls grow up seeing themselves as smart, beautiful, and capable of becoming anything they want to be.

By combining education, representation, and purpose, Shaneisha Dodson is helping shape a future where Black girls see themselves as the heroes of their own stories.
