Gina Merritt: Transforming Affordable Housing in America

Gina Merritt, an affordable housing developer based in Washington, D.C., is making waves in the real estate industry. Her firm, NREUV, has already raised $310 million since 2021 and is leading innovative housing projects across the United States. With 1,200 affordable housing units currently in progress, Merritt is focused on meeting community needs through her projects, which include amenities like workforce development and healthcare services.

Merritt’s journey is as inspiring as her achievements. Growing up in affordable housing in the Bronx and later navigating life as a single mother, she faced many challenges early in her career. For two decades, she worked on housing projects for white-led firms, often struggling to secure funding for her own initiatives.

A significant turning point came in 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, when there was a surge in support for Black entrepreneurs. Merritt seized the moment, raising substantial funds to pursue her vision. In 2024 alone, her firm secured $124 million, with plans to raise an additional $114 million in 2025.

Today, NREUV is working on 17 buildings across Ohio, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., all aimed at providing affordable housing options. The firm’s projects are not just about homes—they are about building communities. Merritt emphasizes integrating services that address the needs of residents, from job training programs to accessible healthcare.

In 2023, NREUV’s rapid growth earned it recognition as one of America’s fastest-growing private companies, boasting a 659% increase in revenue.

Gina Merritt is a testament to resilience and innovation. By blending her personal experiences with a commitment to social impact, she is redefining affordable housing and empowering communities across the nation.
