Black Woman Opens One of the Only Black-Owned Grocery Stores in Chicago

Chicago, Illinois – In a city known for its diverse culture but also for its food deserts, one woman is making a big difference. Liz Abunaw, a Black entrepreneur with a vision, has opened Forty Acres Fresh Market @fortyacresfreshmarket, one of the only Black-owned grocery stores in Chicago. Her mission is simple yet powerful: to bring fresh, healthy, and affordable food to neighborhoods that need it the most.

The idea for 40 Acres Fresh Market started years ago when Abunaw noticed how difficult it was for many families in Chicago to find affordable fruits, vegetables, and other fresh food close to home. Many communities, especially on the West Side, had to travel long distances or settle for unhealthy options at corner stores and fast-food chains. Abunaw wanted to change that.

She began with pop-up markets and delivery services, bringing fresh produce directly to local neighborhoods. The response from the community was strong, and soon the vision grew into something bigger — a full grocery store. Today, her store stands as a source of hope, health, and empowerment.

At 40 Acres Fresh Market, customers can find everything from colorful fruits and vegetables to pantry staples and healthy snacks. But it is more than just a grocery store. For many, it is a community space where people feel seen and supported. Abunaw’s store creates jobs, boosts local pride, and proves that access to fresh food should not be a luxury.

Her journey has not been easy. Starting a business, especially in underserved communities, comes with challenges. But Abunaw’s determination and love for her community kept her moving forward. She continues to inspire many young entrepreneurs and women of color who dream of building businesses with impact.

By opening 40 Acres Fresh Market, Liz Abunaw is not only filling grocery bags — she is filling a gap in the city’s food system. Her store is proof that change is possible when vision meets action. Step by step, aisle by aisle, she is reshaping the way Chicago thinks about food access and community care.
