James Makes History as First Black Creative Director at Ralph Lauren

James M. Jeter, an alum of Morehouse College, has been named the new Creative Director of Design and brand Direction for Men’s Polo at Ralph Lauren. This is a historic moment for the 57-year-old brand. Jeter is the first Black Creative Director at Ralph Lauren, a significant achievement for him and the company’s diverse customer base.

Jeter’s journey with Ralph Lauren began as an intern, a role he secured after graduating from the prestigious Morehouse College. His talent and dedication quickly became evident, leading to promotions within the company. Jeter advanced from design associate to the lead designer of the Morehouse and Spelman Colleges Collection, a unique line launched in 2022. This collection, inspired in part by the racial justice movements of 2020, honours Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) like Morehouse and Spelman.

During the development of the HBCU-inspired collection, Jeter had an honest conversation with Ralph Lauren. He shared his concerns about the brand’s inclusivity, asking if Ralph Lauren would remain an “all-white” brand. This open dialogue led to discussions that helped shape the HBCU-inspired collection and demonstrated the company’s commitment to inclusion and representation.

Now, as Black Creative Director, Jeter is leading the Men’s Polo brand at a time when Ralph Lauren is gaining popularity among young Black consumers. His historic appointment signifies a new direction for the company, as Jeter brings his unique vision and cultural insight to the iconic brand.
