Sista RN Opens Doors for Black Nurses in Healthcare

This black woman has been a beacon of hope and change for Black nurses across the country. Sharonda La’Shon, known as Sista RN, she has dedicated her career to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for Black nurses to thrive in healthcare. Through her innovative programs and unwavering determination, she has helped hundreds of Black nurses secure specialty positions, higher pay, and leadership roles—earning her the nickname “the Harriet Tubman of Nursing.”

Sista RN’s journey began with a simple yet powerful mission: to ensure that Black nurses were no longer overlooked or undervalued in the healthcare system. Recognizing that many hospitals required experience but often failed to provide opportunities, she created pathways to success through her signature nursing education programs. These programs, offered through Sista RN University, focus on emergency and critical care training, equipping nurses with the skills and confidence needed to excel in high-demand specialties.

Her work is deeply personal. Sista RN comes from a family with a rich history of activism—her relatives marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and one close family member was even shot during a protest fighting for the rights of Black nurses and doctors. Today, she carries on that legacy by empowering the next generation of Black nurses to not only enter the field but to lead and innovate within it.

Through her efforts, Sista RN has placed hundreds of highly qualified Black nurses in hospitals across the U.S., many of whom had previously struggled to secure positions despite their credentials. But her impact goes beyond just filling jobs—she’s creating access and transforming lives. Her programs don’t just train nurses; they prepare them to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and advocates within the healthcare system.

“Representation matters,” Sista RN often says. “When Black nurses see someone who looks like them in leadership roles, it changes what they believe is possible for themselves.”

Her work has not gone unnoticed. Nurses who have gone through her programs often describe her as a mentor, a motivator, and a trailblazer. Many credit her with helping them secure higher-paying positions, advance their careers, and gain the confidence to take on leadership roles.

As the healthcare industry continues to grapple with staffing shortages and inequities, Sista RN’s mission remains more critical than ever. Through her tireless efforts, she is not only addressing the nursing shortage but also ensuring that Black nurses have a seat at the table—and the tools to succeed.
